Outset Profiles

Candida Gertler
Co-Director and Trustee

Candida Gertler co-founded Outset Contemporary Art Fund with Yana Peel in June 2003. After studying law and journalism in Germany and Switzerland, she worked in journalism and PR until 1992. Candida moved to London in 1993 and studied Modern and Contemporary Art at Christie’s and Sotheby’s. She gained experience within the arena of contemporary art by overseeing Contemporary Art Events for the charitable organisation BFAMI (British Friends of the Art Museums of Israel), since 1997. Along with her trusteeship of the fund, she is a member of the Tate International Council.

Yana Peel
Co-Director and Trustee

Yana Peel co-founded Outset with Candida Gertler in June 2003. After studying Sciences and Russian at McGill University in Canada, she moved to London in 1997 to pursue post-graduate work at the London School of Economics. From 1998 until 2004 she worked in sales and trading at investment bank Goldman Sachs, most recently as an Executive Director within the Equities Division. Yana is also a member of the NSPCC Therapeutic Board and advisor to the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.

Sam Thorne
Programme Director

Sam Thorne has been working at Outset since January 2007. Sam is a frequent contributor to frieze magazine, where he is online editor.

Charlotte Appleyard
Director of Development

Charlotte Appleyard joined Outset as Development Manager in September 2007. She studied Philosophy and Theology at Oxford University and Art History at the Courtauld and Christie's. She has previously worked for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The National Gallery, and Sotheby's in London. Charlotte is on the board for Turner Contemporary Arts Trust.

Kerstin Traube
Director of Outset Munich

Kerstin Traube has been involved with Outset as a patron since the fund's inception. After studying to become a psychotherapist in London and founding Fresh Start, a counselling scheme based on art therapy programmes, she moved to Munich in 2005, starting Outset Munich in 2006 as a registered charity.

Vered Gadish
Director of Outset Israel

Vered Gadish founded Outset Israel in September 2008. Vered was a curator of Doron Sebbag Art Collection, ORS Ltd, and has also worked at MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, as well as the Tel Aviv branch of Christie's. Vered holds a masters degree in Art Management from New York University and a BA degree in Arts History from Tel Aviv University. Currently she works as a consultant with International and Israeli private collectors and is involved in a corporate art fund investing in international contemporary art.
